Abstract

This study analyzed the antioxidant activities (total polyphenol contents, total flavonoid contents, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, 2,2¡¯-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) activity and reducing power) to investigate the functional effects of fractions of strawberry (Fragaria ananassa var. ¡®Seolhyang¡¯) leaf extract. The extraction yield of ethanol extract of strawberry leaves was 22.37%, while total polyphenolic and flavonoids contents of fractions of the strawberry leaf extract were 43.06¡516.85 mg gallic acid equivalent/g and 13.13¡191.07 mg catechin equivalent/ g, respectively. The ethyl acetate fraction of strawberry leaves extract showed the highest total polyphenols and total flavonoids content, the highest DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP activity, and the greatest reducing power. These results suggest that the ethyl acetate fraction of strawberry leaf extracts can be used as a food additive and anti-aging cosmetic material.
